Slovenia and Croatia on a motorcycle

Riding through Slovenia and Croatia feels like stepping into another world — from the cool mountain air of the Alps to the endless coastlines of the Adriatic. The sheer variety of landscapes makes it a dream destination for any adventure rider.
Over seven days and almost 1,500 kilometres, the two of us rode an unforgettable roundtrip starting in Kranjska Gora. To truly connect with the raw beauty of the Balkans, we laced together a route that combined several TET and ACT tracks. Mother Nature had her own plans, though; heavy rain forced us to change our route and adapt on the fly. But that didn't spoil the fun at all — it just added to the adventure.

The video below shows a few highlights from this incredible journey. In the sections that follow, we’ve shared both our original planned route and the actual tracks we ended up riding, along with downloadable GPS tracks and some essential notes on the roads and lessons learnt along the way to help you plan your own adventure.

Download tracks for GPS

Inspired by the official Adventure Country Tracks (ACT) Croatia and the Trans Euro Trail (TET) tracks through Slovenia and Croatia, we ride a custom 7-day loop. All routes were built and optimized using MyRoute-App (MRA), which allows you to easily verify tracks against major map sources and export them in any GPS-compatible format.

Please note: The ACT tracks are not included in the downloads (except for my alterations).
These routes are owned and maintained by ACT and receive frequent updates. To access them and support their incredible work, please consider becoming an ACT member directly on their website.

The TET tracks are included in the package. However, because trail conditions change, I highly recommend checking them before you head out. In MRA, you can easily overlay and compare your active route with the background tracks.

Scroll down for a detailed breakdown of each day, the maps, and the files.

Information about Slovenia and Croatia

Information about the Tracks

  • The original route was an eight-day counter-clockwise loop, but due to the expected heavy rain at the coast (2 days with more than 60 mm), we decided at the end of day 2 to ride to the east. This resulted in a shorter (one day) and adapted plan (a clockwise loop).
  • The part we skipped was the TET track from Knin to Delnice, including a detour via the Željava Air Base (with an overnight stay in Korenica).
  • The last day was also shortened due to the rain, and we took a more direct route back to Kranjska Gora instead of riding the offroad tracks through the Julian Alps.
  • The tracks provided (and Google Maps) differ slightly from those in the video. One part was closed due to a rally and we took some shortcuts due to the rain on days 4 and 7.
  • Although it reads like we had a lot of rain, it was actually only a few small showers during the whole week. The rest of the time we had dry weather and plenty of sunshine.
  • All main tracks include POIs (fuel, lunch, etc.).
  • Downloaded tracks from MRA can be enriched with icons using POI2PIC if you use a Garmin XT2/XT3 (the GPX download already contains the enriched GPX files).

Note: Let me know if you have any questions about the routes, or if you would like me to publish the original plan as well!

Information about Slovenia and Croatia

  • Make sure you fuel up at the end of the day (every day has one plotted on the map). Some routes have no fuel stations at all down the road, and some stations are closed on Sundays and holidays.
  • Most restaurants in remote areas (90% of the trip) are closed in May!

Getting to Slovenia from The Netherlands

  • We rented a trailer for our bikes and drove to Slovenia. We left home after dinner to drive to a hotel near Bonn in Germany, which made the following day a bit more relaxed.

If you are using a Garmin XT/XT2, please take a look at my articles or use my POI2PIC tool to create one GPX file per day, including POIs with nice icons.
